INTENT

We aim to ensure that:

  • Children access a broad and balanced curriculum that gives them the broad range of knowledge and skills needed for good progress through school and life
  • There is quality and consistency in teaching and learning so that every child makes good progress and no child gets left behind
  • There is a close working partnership between staff and parents and/or carers
  • Every child is included and supported through equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice

IMPLEMENTATION

Our Early Years setting follows the curriculum as outlined in the latest EYFS statutory framework.

The EYFS framework includes 7 areas of learning and development that are equally important and inter-connected. 3 areas, known as the prime areas, are seen as particularly important for igniting curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building children’s capacity to learn, form relationships and thrive.

The prime areas are:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal, social and emotional development

The prime areas are strengthened and applied through 4 specific areas:

  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Throughout Nursery and Reception, each area of learning and development is implemented through planned, purposeful play, and through a mix of adult-led and child-initiated activities. Staff respond to each child’s emerging needs and interests, guiding their development through warm, positive interactions.  As the children grow older, and as their development allows, the balance gradually shifts towards more adult-led activities.

IMPACT

By the end of EYFS:

  • All children progress from their starting points, achieving many of the Early Learning Goals
  • Children develop the characteristics of effective learning which helps them through the rest of school
  • Children develop the ability to manage risks
  • Children enjoy being independent in managing themselves and their learning
  • 100% of parents are happy with their child’s progress
  • Parents feel part of the school community
  • Practice is improved year on year
  • Everyone is included
  • Children have high levels of wellbeing and involvement

Talk, Listen, Cuddle

Talk, Listen, Cuddle are the three ingredients needed to ensure young children get the best start in life.

Talk, Listen, Cuddle is an Essex County Council campaign which has been running since 2011. During this time the campaign has evolved thanks to the creation of various hard resources, family events across Essex, and a social media presence – to name a few!

Our aim is to help parents, carers and families give their young children the best start in life, developing their communication skills through playful learning at home. Please click on the buttons below to access a range of ideas, top tips and games to support children’s language and development in readiness for school.

This campaign is led by a small working group from the Essex Early Years and Childcare Team. Early childhood development is a passion for all of us and we are dedicated to spreading the messages about the importance of playful learning at home.
