Geography at Hatfield Peverel Infant and Nursery School
During ‘Around the world’ week, Year One children learnt about Canada. They were fortunate to have a visit from Mrs Fraser, one of our Learning Support Assistants who was born and grew up in Canada. She showed the children pictures and talked to them about what it was like to live there. She also taught the children how to scare of a bear if they came across one! They also learnt a popular campfire song sung in Canadian Summer camps.
Children in Year One enjoyed going on a walk in the local community to identify buildings and features near our school. They learnt that this is called field work and they used a tick sheet to identify features we spotted along the way. The walk included St. Andrew’s Church, the shops, the allotments and the recreation ground where they talked about the new outdoor gym. Some parents kindly gave up their time to accompany the children.
Year Two children enjoyed drawing aerial view maps of the school garden. They thought about the location of the key features and thought about the scale of their drawings. They then discussed what they liked about our school garden and what could be improved! The biggest wish was for a hot tub with fairy lights!
At Hatfield Peverel Infant and Nursery School, we aim to ignite children’s curiosity about the world, starting with their local environment in Hatfield Peverel and building outward to the wider world. Our curriculum helps children develop a strong sense of place, recognise different environments and communities, and begin to use geographical language and skills with confidence.
